How do you get to Chachapoyas?
Travelling from the city of Lima by airplane to the cities of Chiclayo, Tarapoto or Cajamarca, then take the bus to our city of Chachapoyas.
Route 01The Chachapoyas airport is not currently operational. The nearest option is the Tarapoto airport which has frequent daily flights from Lima and Iquitos. The distance from Tarapoto to Chachapoyas is 335 km on a paved road. The route from Tarapoto to Chachapoyas is one of the most spectacular in all of Peru because it climbs from the Amazonian jungle into the green Andes of Chachapoyas while crossing the Alto Mayo and its orchid forests, the Pomacochas Lake, and other places of scenic and ecological interest.
Route 02You can also reach Chachapoyas from Chiclayo, in which case the route is 435 km (almost 100 km more than from Tarapoto). You can travel by night bus arriving in Chachapoyas very early in the morning. On that same day you can visit the Kuelap fortress, Gocta waterfall, or the caverns of Quiocta and sarcophagi of Karajía on guided tours arranged at our hostel.
Route 03The other route to get to Chachapoyas is from Cajamarca driving along one of the most spectacular roads in Peru. You will drive uphill to 3600 meters above sea level to the pass called Abra Chimu. You then proceed downhill toward the town of Celendin crossing grasslands and continuing your trip uphill again to 3000 meters above sea level. From here, you drive downhill to 800 meters above sea level and then up again to 3600 meters and arrive at the Calla Calla pass where you will proceed downhill again to Leymebamba. From here, you continue to Chachapoyas along the Utcubamba river. The total journey is 335 km. crossing and enjoying this spectacular landscape.
Route 04The last route is from Vilcabamba (Ecuador) to the village of Zumba and the La Balsa border. Your trip continues to San Ignacio, where you can sleep and continue your trip the next day to Jaen and Chachapoyas. This route is approximately 460 km.
What do you need to take?
Bring loose, light clothing that is comfortable to walk in and protects against the rain. Also bring boots with a good grip for hiking excursions and sandals for the water. Additionally, bring a sweater and jacket because Chachapoyas is located in the northeastern region of Perú at an altitude of 2335 meters above sea level. A hat or cap, sunglasses, sun block and insect repellent are also recommended. It is very important to bring water or some fluids to rehydrate during your journey.
What climate can you expect to find in Chachapoyas?
The weather is predominantly mild and pleasant. During the day the temperature reaches 23°C when it's sunny and 16°C if the sky is cloudy. At night the temperature does not usually drop below 10°C.
When is the rainy season?
The rainy season starts in November and usually lasts until April. Yet even during the rainy season, the sun usually appears at least every two days.
